The divine voice of French lyric coloratura Patricia Petibon singing the grief-stricken aria ‘Ah! Mio cor!’ from Handel’s opera Alcina.
One of the most impressive readings of this aria I’ve ever heard. Such a unique voice, capable of glassy, fragile high lyricism and then passionate outbursts, full of genuine emotional expression and dramaticism. She fluctuates so cunningly within the vocal line from these extended, ghostly yearning phrases into breathy, wild fury, which highlights Alcina’s instability completely.
The low notes are seriously impressive and incredibly virtuosic. Not only does she project them, but she colours them so well which is extremely rare for a high lyric coloratura, full of anguish and even hints of anger and retribution. Then in contrast there are the haunting interpolated high notes that are just full of inarticulate despair.
A very great talent.
